When Robin opened her eyes, she was standing at Reyna’s grave, holding a single white rose. It was warm, and raining, the drops soaking her dark hair. To Robin, the very heavens were weeping for her sister. She knelt, placed the rose on Reyna’s grave, and kissed the photograph of her sister that sat next to the newly placed flower. Robin stood, allowing the grief and rain to soak in and wash away the darkness that had clouded her memories.

Reyna, dressed all in white, her face glorious in its serenity, placed a hand on Robin’s shoulder as she continued to look at the grave. “You know I didn’t kill myself, right?” Reyna asked. “I didn’t do it, but it wasn’t an accident either.”

“I know,” Robin said. “Daddy did it, right?”

“Yeah. I told him I was going to the police, and he got crazy mad. But I screwed up. I got mad right back. I told him about Ramon, and how we were going to run away. He said he would never give me up to some ‘filthy Mexican boy.’ Robin drew in her breath sharply as Reyna spoke, but there were no more tears to be had. “I told him that all the good parts about me are Mexican. He just blew up, Mercedes. He grabbed the wheel, and tried to hit the other cars. I tried to fight him off, but that skinny bastard was too strong. He turned the wheel while I was still driving, and stomped on my foot on the gas. Drove us right into a tree. Last thing I saw before I died was the tree falling over.”

Robin lifted her head to the sky and let the rain bathe her sorrow as Reyna told her the truth – finally, the truth. “Am I … am I just dreaming this too, Reyna?” Robin asked.

Reyna shook her head, and waved her right arm, clearing the rain and the sky with a single gesture. “Not in this place, little bird, not here. This isn’t just a dream. You’re in the Stream, and it’s much, much more than just dreaming. The other side, they don’t realize that yet. They know some of the truth, but not all.”

Reyna paused, and Robin turned to meet her gaze. The older girl was illuminated, but the light seemed to come from within rather than without. She met Robin’s eyes and continued speaking. “It’s all connected, you know? We’re all connected – the energy – love, hate, life, death. It’s all in here someplace. If you’re strong in here, you’re strong out there. And if you die in here, well, some of you dies out there too. You need to be really careful in here. I won’t try to stop you, Mercedes. I don’t even want to stop you. I just need you to know you are more than you think, and this is more than just having weird dreams.”

“The Overdude, right?” Robin asked. “Him and that Abner guy?”

“Yeah, Overdose is part of it, but just a part.
